It's Time To Clean the LP House
by Christine Smith, Dec. 13, 2007
It is imperative we clean house at the LP - sweeping it clean from all the imposters who have infiltrated our party, destroying it piece by piece from within for their own agendas.
In 2008 every office and position - from Chair, Vice Chair, all LNC positions, the Executive Director, to every elected LP office nationwide - must be filled with true advocates of liberty. It's time we elect only those who care about freedom more than anything else, for they have the power to influence our path as a political party and select those who will hold key positions of power within our party.
2008 is the year the LP is either revived or dies. It's that important, and we need you!
It will be a fight, and we need every liberty lover to be part of it.
Agree? Then you must support only candidates whose priority is advancing liberty. No longer can
you accept quasi-'Libertarians,' those who want to weaken our platform and abandon our principles.
To be a successful political party, we must remove every person who is a barrier to our goal of advancing
liberty. We must retain and vote in only individuals whose love for advancing liberty surpasses any
other motive. We cannot compromise any office/position with anything less.
If the LP ceases to be the party of principle, it ceases to have any meaningful efficacy whatsoever.
It and its politicians will become as despicable and abhorrent as any other political party...it will
degenerate into the corrupt morass of American politics.
And, I, you, and many like us nationwide (I've heard from so many Libertarians nationwide who despair
for the future of our party) are already seeing this slow insidious degeneration happening.
So many have written and spoken with me, taking the time to share their concern that the party they loved,
the party whose platform they were excited by, the party they could wholeheartedly embrace, has been
overrun with warmongers, statists, and those whom, even if we can give the benefit of doubt to for
their intention, are people who believe the party stances must be weakened to be more 'mainstream' - but
whose such actions are slowly but surely tearing the party and everything it stood for down.
As Tryon Edwards, (American Theologian, 1809-1894), expressed, 'Compromise is but the sacrifice of one
right or good in the hope of retaining another--too often ending in the loss of both.'
In this past year I've learned so much. I've been blessed to meet good Libertarians nationwide.
But I've also been disillusioned, and now have come to the opinion based on my personal experience
(and the experiences of others) that not all who join, and call themselves Libertarians, and even
who hold LP offices/positions actually love liberty. I am no longer naive, but wise. Wise because
of my own experiences and realizations, and much wiser because of the hundreds of you who have
cared to share your own disillusioning experiences with me.
But we can take the party back - in your state - and at the National LP Convention in 2008.
No LP Convention has ever been more important this one. Thus, if you are one of us, one who cares about
freedom and uncompromised liberty, then you've got to do something every opportunity you have. It may
mean signing up as a delegate, working to restore/protect/retain the principles that encompassed the
platform so many of us were pleased with, campaigning for your favorite pro-liberty candidates at
every level, writing, whatever you can do-it must be done now.
I'm turning my disillusionment with the LP 'leadership' into action. I'm fighting for the survival
of the LP as you, I, and many others before us knew and appreciated: The party of uncompromising
principle. By its very definition, a principle cannot be compromised, for once compromised it is
actually abandoned and no principle exist. This is the slippery slope to downfall and destruction.
It was because of principle, and its clear elucidation in our previous platform, that
I found a political home in the LP. And I'm going to fight for this political home.
The LP must stand for principle. It must stand for ethical consistency in the political arena.
Or else it stands for nothing. And if it stands for nothing, it becomes yet another sorry
organization where a few get their egos stroked, becoming big fish in a little pond, and
who use the party (and its members) for their own agendas - not the agenda of liberty.
Political principles mean something only if you adhere to them...once they are compromised, they cease to
exist...and thus would go any political party, movement or organization once they abandon their principles.
I do not want to see that to happen to the LP.
Now is the time for strong bold courageous adherence to our principles.
Want the LP to grow? The solution is not watering down the principles, but strong outspoken adherence
to what makes our party unique and great.
Now is the time for each of you who love liberty, and who have placed their hope and support for years
into this party, to stand up and say 'I'm not going to take it anymore!' Let's put an end to the
infiltration which I and others believe has occurred nationwide for years.
It truly is now or never, as I and others see it. And I dedicate myself to fighting for the LP because
I know I am not alone. I know most of you, most members of the LP, feel precisely as I do.
But we must come together to save our party. We are not alone! We are the majority but we must take action now.
I'm someone who believes in pure uncompromising Libertarian principles. And I believe the LP still
has great potential in a nation whose people are disillusioned and disgusted with politics as usual.
But that potential is destroyed if our party's 'leadership' continues to be weakened by people with
major non-libertarian stances, ulterior motives, agendas and actions. Whether such people are
intentionally doing this to keep our party down, or simply using our party for their own ego power-hungry
agendas, the result is the same - we are losing the Party of Principle. By their fruits you shall know
them! And the 'fruits' we are experiencing now are spoiled and rotten. The party will become spoiled
and rotten if we allow this to continue. And I do not want to see that happen, do you?
Many talented dedicated Libertarians have come before us to build up the Party of Principle, let's not
let non-Libertarians posing as Libertarians strike down our party from within.
Advancing liberty is my goal.
I care about the Libertarian Party because it is the Party of Principle. But I see it eroding and
deteriorating into something far less than it can be, and I want to join with you so together we can
build it stronger than ever.
I ask you to please join with me and many others nationwide. You are not alone. Speak out, write,
research all candidates for every LP office and put only true Libertarians into any position.
And if at all possible, I urge you to join us in Denver at the LP National Convention in May,
2008 where we are going to valiantly fight to return our party to its founding principles for good.
There is a quote from Friedrich Nietzsche I particularly appreciate: 'What does not destroy me, makes me
stronger. '
Well, that's how I feel right now. I've suffered the pain of disillusionment about what is
happening in my political party, but I am also now empowered with the truth, knowledge, and
determination needed to be part of leading the restoration, the saving, of the only political
party which I could wholeheartedly identify with and work for.
I will boldly share and work for true Libertarian principles. I will not hide or water them down as
so many are trying to do.
Millions of Americans for the first time have been exposed to libertarian principles, the
word 'libertarian' is no longer shunned but regarded with interest if not enthusiasm.
The time is ripe to bring the LP to them...the true LP...the Party of Principle. Of course, even
among true libertarians/Libertarians, we have our differences, but what we share is much greater
and that's what we must focus upon if we are to have one political party in this nation that stands
for America's Founding Father's principles of non-interventionism and limited government.
I truly believe 2008 will determine if our party survives, thrives and brings in Americans nationwide or
disintegrates into oblivion on the political stage.
True libertarians adhere to unyielding principles. And though they may differ as to what the best
approaches to making government smaller are, and differ even on individual issues, they never seek
to compromise the core principles on which this party was founded.
Please join me in the fight to save the LP. The party must be fixed and cleansed. It is time to clean
house - every nook and cranny of it!
